I’ve been having a really hard time writing for my blog, Facebook and Instagram lately, and I couldn’t really understand why. After a long time reflecting, I found out what was the problem. We live in a world where motherhood is a subject extremely polemic, specially now that the access to information is so easy and social media is full of “experts” demanding what you should do. There’s judgment everywhere: how do you give birth, how do you feed your baby, what type of diapers your baby wear, are you a stay home mom, did your baby went to daycare too early (or too late), is your baby not doing what all the other babies in the same age are... The list goes on and on. The thing is, every single person is different. What is good for me, may be uncomfortable for you. We all have different personalities, backgrounds, families, cultures, and that’s what makes the world so amazing — if we know how to respect and accept each other and our differences. I still don’t have my own babies, but when I was a nanny for 2 years I felt a little bit of the challenge that is to raise kids. It is already pretty hard, even without all the judgment that is involved. I feel that my purpose here is to make the difference in many people’s lives, specially moms and babies. So I am going to use this space to provide evidence-based information to families, providing knowledge, so they can make their own decision, based in all they learned plus their own reality. I am in school to become a Licensed Midwife, and I think out-of-hospital births are amazing. That doesn’t mean that I would suggest that to everybody. That doesn’t mean that I am not going to support a mom that decided to schedule a cesarean. I will always support and provide all I can to ensure that women (and their families) are empowered of their decisions. There is an African proverb that I really love that says that “it takes a village to raise a child”. I really hope we can all use of our empathy, our love, our care to support each other and make motherhood lighter! And I am here, to be part of your village too!
